FRHS Staff Meeting Observation
On October 14, 2015, I attended the Fossil Ridge High School Staff Meeting at 7:30am. The staff meeting was held in the school's roundhouse auditorium. The staff meeting included all employees of Fossil Ridge High School. Assistant Principal, Brad Nye, led the initial part of the staff meeting and introduced the two student council members who had an announcement. Following the student's announcement the agenda included: Mark Barry presenting the Staff Member of Excellence Award, various athletic announcements that included Boy's Tennis going to State and football playing Legacy High School for military night on October 15, 2015. The second round of parent teacher conferences where scheduled for that evening and Brad Nye finished his presentation with the importance of all teachers and staff members filling out a school survey about the culture and climate of the high school. Nye encouraged everyone to "be a part of the solution" by filling out the survey honestly. He also indicated that the surveys were going to stay anonymous, so there was no threat or concern for reprimand or repercussions if there was something shared that was less than desirable.
At the end of the meeting, Brad opened the floor up for other "celebrations" and/or any "announcements." I assumed that everyone would be itching to rush out of there; however, several hands went up and several individuals made announcements that encouraged school/staff/student participation. These announcements included: Marching Band State Championship Competition on October 24, 2015, yearbook announcements, and several other teachers highlighting student achievements. After there were no more announcements Brad Nye stood up, smiled and said, "Have a great day, guys."
This was an amazing opportunity to experience the school staff as a whole. There are over 100 teachers employed at Fossil Ridge High School and we rarely see everyone at the same time. It was also amazing to see the encouragement and enthusiasm of the administration. I understand why the culture and climate of the school is so positive. The school as a whole seems to be extremely positive, collaborative, and encouraging.
